What's happened in years past.......

Old Club News

September 2015 - Jean and Barry Lambert from Canberra, Australia recently included Harrogate in their itinerary for a couple of days of petanque, enjoyed with Club members.

20 August 2015 - Our first ever away match was a friendly against North Stainley Pétanque Club.

12 July 2015 - The club melee was very well attended with a dozen members taking part.  The format was four ends (first to nine points), each with a different partner.  Each individual's points were then added together to produce their score.

  1. Nigel Clay 34 points (out of a possible 36)
  2. Kevin Neil 33
  3. Brenda Sutcliffe 31
  4. Janette Dorrington 30
2 May 2015 - The first CNG Invitational Triples was a great success. Full details.

18 Sept 2014 - The 2014 St Michael's Cup was won by Les Locques while the Plate was won by CNG Great Boules of Fire.  Congratulations to both teams.

09 Mar 2014 -  The Mayor of Harrogate, Councillor Mike Newby, launched the 3rd Annual Saint Michael's Cup by joining invited guests from Saint Michael's Hospice and sponsors, Ellis Bates, for a social game of pétanque at the Pierhead Bouledrome. Cllr Newby clearly enjoyed his game, and not least by being on the winning team with Consort, Clive Kirkham and Keith Peters, a volunteer at Saint Michaels.  "This is a great example of co-operation to re-generate an underused space to provide a recreational facility in the heart of the Town to benefit residents and visitors alike.

17 Nov 2013 - Thank you to Nigel and Julie for hosting the 'end of season pot luck lunch'.  Most regular players were able to attend, along with some less regular players (we're working on the "less regular" bit!)

24 Sept 2013 - The weather was a lot kinder to the St Michael's Cup competition than last year and the 2013 finals were played on time.  The full report is on the St Michael's Cup page.

22 Sept 2013 -  The 'Season Finale' was well attended, with 12 people entering the mêlée.  An on-form Rupert Madeley managed to win all four of his games to become our 2013 champion.  Jim Walker was a creditable second.

14 July 2013 - Our first Bastille Day celebration was a big success.  Many thanks to the club members and friends who put in a lot of hard work to organise the event, decorate the terrain, teach pétanque, and generally be there for the event.  There was a very impressive turnout by the Harrogate French Meetup Group who joined the many Harrogate residents and visitors who stopped by to try our sport.

 St Michael's Cup 2012 - Runners-up

7 May 2013 - The much delayed 2012 St Michael's Cup final has finally taken place! The Swinging Pensioners defeated Vodka Red Boules by 13 points to 6.  See the St Michael's Cup page for details.

5 May 2013 - The first Grand Slam Pétanque event of the series took place at Lightwater Valley. 24 teams entered, including one from HMPC (Pat, John and Steve). The team came second (out of four) in their league stage to be seeded eleventh for the knockout stage. Unfortunately, after lunch Team HMPC couldn't sustain their early promise and two thrashings later they were out of the competition. A few photos have been posted in the Gallery.

Not ideal conditions for a pre-AGM game...

...but we tried anyway.

1 January 2013- A few members braved the chilly conditions (and their hangovers) to celebrate New Year's Day with a few games. As usual, any spectators lingering slightly too long were press-ganged into playing.

14th September 2012 -  The Harrogate Advertiser published a letter from Julie Clay in reply to a letter the previous week that complained about the waste of Council money on the "unused" pétanque facilities. Julie pointed out that the the facilities were paid for by our sponsors, Ellis Bates Group, and were built by club volunteers.  She also mentioned that there are three well attended club sessions every week, as well as all of the St Michael's Cup matches.

7th September 2012 -  Harrogate Pétanque's fame is growing, not only are we frequently the subject of visitor's photographs, we're now considered a suitable subject for art.  Haven't quite worked out which members posed for the portrait!
